Berberis thunbergii sp. - Rose Glow Japanese Barberry
Size: L
  • Berberis thungergii sp. - Rose Glow Japanese Barberry

Japanese barberry is an undemanding ornamental shrub – we are impressed by its deciduous branches and spiny upper roots, often bizarre shapes and tiny, often multi-coloured leaves. Kokedamas made from this plant are in fact genuine mini statues, each having its own story to tell. If it wants to grow too big, just cut off the unnecessary sprouts!

Berberis plants can live alone, but also in symmetric or contrasting pairs. Every kokedama is very spectacular and attractive-looking, with about 40 cm typical height.

If you simply order one on our webshop, then we will select a beautiful plant for you, but you may also make your selection writing the identifier from our Facebook page selection into the order form and you will get the plant you fell in love with.

Light demand: place the plant at a bright location with partial shade. Though it can in theory tolerate direct sunlight, we have seen its leaves drying out when exposed to excessive sun and the heat that comes with it.

Water demand: it prefers a slight dry period between two bathing cycles. Unless it is extremely hot, a 7-10-day watering period may be ideal.

Fertilising: some (not too much) fertilising will be useful during the flowering season (i.e. in spring), as for any plant. But we are very careful with the nutritients in order to preserve the compact form.
